Who was Cora P. Maloney?Cora P. Maloney

The college is named after Cora P. Maloney, a resident of the City of Buffalo who was active in community, educational, and political affairs.  She was a strong advocate of educational equality and excellence, and community awareness, becoming the first woman and African-American elected to the Masten District of the Buffalo Common Council in 1957. Mrs. Maloney was also the first Democrat ever to be elected in the Masten district as well as the first African-American to be elected in the district in 20 years.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri and a graduate of the University of Kansas, Mrs. Maloney was active in Kansas Democratic politics.  She was president of Buffalo Intro-Club Council for two years as well as president of the Democratic Business and Professional Women's group, which she founded.  The Democratic Business and Professional Women’s group established a Cora P. Maloney Scholarship Fund, which was awarded each year to a young woman studying in the field of Medical Arts, pharmacy, nursing, or medical technology. These numerous accomplishments and the exemplary way Mrs. Maloney lived her life, make us proud to honor her legacy by attaching her name to our department.
