Daniel Acker Scholars Program

The Daniel Acker Scholars Program serves as an integral part of the University at Buffalo’s (UB) efforts to recruit and retain academically talented and diverse students. Through a unique educational experience, the Daniel Acker Scholars Program prepares its students, who have strong leadership potential and a commitment to community service, to be future leaders in their chosen field of study. The Acker Scholars Program is an individualized admissions program that helps its scholars achieve academic and personal success. By fostering a culture of acceptance and inclusion, the Acker Scholars Program encourages students to embrace all aspects of their social identities, which is an essential component of them growing into well-rounded students.

The Acker Scholars Program staff work hard to advise, encourage, and groom their students to pursue undergraduate research opportunities, engaging internships, and enriching community service endeavors, to eventually complete graduate-level degrees and successfully enter into the work force. Acker Scholars have a long tradition of contributing to student leadership at UB and participating in community service. Participants have completed medical, dental and law school, MBAs, and various graduate programs nationally and at UB.

Selection Criteria

The University at Buffalo’s Office of Admissions invites eligible students to express their interest in participating in the Daniel Acker Scholars Program. If selected, students earn a merit scholarship that is renewable for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study at UB.

Daniel Acker Scholars Program Goals and Objectives:

  • To plan programs and workshops that highlight the vast multicultural diversity within the Acker Scholars program, and help them to fully embrace their unique individuality.
  • To assist the Acker Scholars with building positive working relationships with faculty members. Through one-on-one advising sessions, workshops, programs, and assignments (such as the “Professor Interview” in CPM 101), staff members help students to develop strategies to build positive, working relationships with faculty.
  • To plan community service projects that help students to develop an appreciation for helping their local communities, and understand the needs of the residents that live in the Buffalo and Western New York region. By giving back and providing service to this community, Acker Scholars have the chance to see the impact that their efforts have within the community.
